Doug Carn – Jazz is Dead 005

Doug Carn Jazz is Dead 005

One of the things I enjoy most about the Jazz is Dead series is the way its name contrasts the significant work it performs of introducing Jazz luminaries to a new audience, thus giving them new life. December 11, Doug Carn’s contribution to the Jazz is Dead canon will be released and it’s a doozy, potentially replacing Roy Ayers’ release as my favorite JID outing. The multi-instrumentalist and former member of Black Jazz Records comes in hot with a funky 11 track creation you wont believe wasn’t composed in the 70s. Refreshingly, it has a strong Hip Hop influence, which was an early critique I had of the JID series. I assumed Ali and Adrian’s contribution would be more substantial in that area but as I listen to the compilations in their entirety I’m beginning to notice and appreciate their input more. Special shouts out to Zach Ramacier and Shai Golan who provide some really wonderfully hypnotic horn work throughout, but especially on Dimensions and my favorite, Processions.
